Objective: to determine the in vitro antimicrobial effect of Tagetes minuta essential oil on Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis. Materials and methods: a total of 7 kg of T. minuta leaves were collected in Cajamarca, Peru, of which 4 kg were distilled to obtain the essential oil. The Kirby-Bauer method was used to evaluate the antimicrobial activity, varying the oil concentrations. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD test. Chlorhexidine at 0.12% showed larger inhibition zones (16 to 22 mm). For E. faecalis, inhibition zones ranged from 6 to 9 mm at 10% and from 14 to 17 mm at 100%, while chlorhexidine presented zones of 13 to 16 mm. Ethanol, used as a control, showed no inhibitory effect. Conclusion: tagetes minuta essential oil demonstrated in vitro antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis, although chlorhexidine was more effective at all tested concentrations.es_PE
