Objective: to evaluate the in vitro antifungal effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (roselle) against Candida albicans ATCC 10231.
Materials and methods: the study employed a quantitative approach with a prospective, cross-sectional, experimental design. Hibiscus sabdariffa flowers harvested in Jayanca, Lambayeque, and the *Candida albicans* ATCC 10231 strain were used. A hydroalcoholic extract was prepared using 96% ethanol via maceration. Concentrations of 10%, 25%, 50%, and 100% were evaluated using the Kirby-Bauer agar diffusion method, with fluconazole as the positive control and ethanol as the negative control. Inhibition zones were measured using a vernier caliper and analyzed via ANOVA and the Tukey test using SPSS 26 software.
Results: at 72 hours, the 10% and 25% concentrations showed no inhibition; the 50% concentration produced a mean inhibition zone of 5.67 mm, and the 100% concentration produced 15.33 mm. Fluconazole produced a zone of 16.67 mm. The 100% concentration demonstrated activity statistically comparable to that of fluconazole (p = 0.415).
Conclusion: the hydroalcoholic extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa exhibited concentration- and time-dependent antifungal activity with the 100% concentration being particularly notable demonstrating antifungal potential against *Candida albicans.
