| es_PE |
dc.description.abstract | Objective: to comprehensively evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of oregano essential oil (Origanum vulgare), analyzing its chemical composition, mechanisms of action of its bioactive components, and effectiveness against various pathogens.
Methodology: a systematic review of 10 scientific studies published in the last five years was conducted, selected from academic databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. The studies included microorganisms such as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and pathogenic fungi.
Results: oregano essential oil demonstrated high antimicrobial efficacy, particularly against multidrug-resistant strains such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and fungi like Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Its main bioactive components, carvacrol and thymol, disrupt microbial cell membranes, causing critical damage that leads to cell death. Additionally, synergistic activity was reported when the oil was combined with other antimicrobial compounds, enhancing its therapeutic potential.
Conclusión: oregano essential oil is a promising natural alternative to address the growing issue of antimicrobial resistance, with potential applications in medicine and the food industry. However, in vivo studies are recommended to validate its
effectiveness in clinical and commercial settings. | es_PE |
